Description
The Northstar NS-049 Dark Blue Amber/Purple rod creates an intense semi-opaque effect with a bluish tint. Work it in a neutral to slightly oxidizing flame. Reduction alters the striking effect, which is amplified when paired with NS-054 Star White.
The Amber Purple family, developed by Suellen Fowler, is known for its versatility and unique effects in borosilicate glass. NS-013 Amber Purple is best suited for thick pieces and sculptures, while NS-026 Double Amber Purple stretches further, making it ideal for finer applications.
To achieve the violet effect, the flame setting is crucial. Use a strong oxidizing flame. An insufficiently oxidizing flame will make the color opaque and turn it a milky yellow. During initial heating, a metallic haze may appear due to reduced silver particles. If the glass is not heated enough, this haze thickens and turns matte gray, masking the true color.
To achieve the violet effect, heat the Northstar rod intensely with a strong flame. Slowly rotate the piece to remove the metallic haze. Heat until the glass is nearly boiling. Once the initial haze is removed, it may reform but dissipates more easily with moderate heat.
There are two methods to create the strike : flame striking or kiln striking. For flame striking, allow the piece to cool for 20 seconds, then reheat it until it barely glows. For a uniform effect, prefer kiln striking. Heat the piece to 1125-1150 °F for about one hour, while monitoring thinner pieces to avoid deformation.
