Description
The Northstar NS-155 Ruby Slippers rod draws inspiration from an older version made by Northstar over 15 years ago. This new formula uses a base of NS-088 Pomegranate rod, enriched with TAG Stardust sparkle. With its low air content, this glass is easy to use in various flame atmospheres. To achieve optimal striking, it is recommended to kiln this glass for 6 to 8 hours at 1050°F. This red from the Northstar NS-155 Ruby Slippers rod offers excellent possibilities for overlays and color combinations. Note that the sparkle is difficult to capture in photos but is best seen in natural light.
The NS-088 Pomegranate glass rod is the lightest shade in the ruby family. Because it is unsaturated, it requires kiln treatment to reach the final color. This color is easily repeatable, and the striking is not affected by prolonged soaking. When heated, the rubies become transparent. Once re-heated, they return to their original red color.
When working with these rubies, it is essential to use a neutral to oxidizing flame. The NS-007L Light Ruby is suitable for sculptural work. In contrast, the NS-008 Dark Ruby, due to its intensity, can strike easily in the flame or in the kiln. It is crucial to monitor the kiln time, as over-striking can result in a dull red.
When working with self-striking rubies, the concentration of copper determines the final shade. The thickness of the glass also influences the appearance of the color. Each type of ruby has unique characteristics that make it suitable for specific applications, ensuring versatility in creations.
