Northstar Light Ruby rod

Description

The Northstar NS-007L Light Ruby rod is a vibrant, transparent ruby. It is the least saturated shade among the three rubies. Although it cannot be stretched as much as the NS-008 Dark Ruby, its advantage lies in the ability to be worked for long periods without becoming cloudy. This makes it ideal for sculpture and assembled blown work.

NS-007L is not overly sensitive to flame chemistry, but to ensure it strikes to a clean ruby red, it should be worked in a neutral to slightly oxidizing flame. When heated, it becomes transparent. Upon reheating, these reds return to their original color. Being the lightest, NS-007L will only slightly regain its red hue. For the best results, it is recommended to strike the Northstar NS-007L Light Ruby rod in a kiln at 565°C / 1050°F. This allows for a uniform and deep red.

Regarding applications, NS-007L is perfect for sculptural projects, while the NS-008 Dark Ruby is designed for fine applications. Be cautious not to over-strike these reds, as this could lead to a dull and opaque hue.

The Northstar ruby family includes other rods like the NS-155 Ruby Slippers, inspired by an older version. This rod uses a red base of NS-088 Pomegranate, enhanced with TAG Stardust, offering excellent possibilities for layering and color combinations. The NS-088 Pomegranate rod stands out for its ability to avoid browning. Its low tendency to change color makes it an ideal choice for mandrel-wound beads.
