Description
Northstar NS-088 Pomegranate rod is the lightest shade in Northstar’s self-striking ruby family. This color is easy to use. When heated, it becomes transparent. Upon cooling, the Northstar Pomegranate rod turns red again, depending on its thickness. As this color is lightly saturated, the final strike must be done in a kiln. This process is easily repeatable and is not affected by prolonged soaking in the kiln.
Northstar’s Ruby color family is extremely diverse. Each shade has been carefully formulated to meet specific applications. For example, the NS-007L Light Ruby rod is the lightest and is perfect for sculptural work. The NS-008 Dark Ruby rod, with its intensity, can easily strike in the flame or in the kiln. However, caution must be taken with over-striking, as it can result in a dull, opaque red. This happens if the glass is worked too long in the flame or left in the kiln for too long.
The NS-155 Ruby Slippers rod, with its NS-088 Pomegranate base and TAG Stardust sparkle, also offers excellent possibilities. With little to no air content, this glass is easy to use in all flame atmospheres. To achieve optimal striking, it is recommended to kiln this glass for 6 to 8 hours at 565°C / 1050°F.
When working with these rubies, it is crucial to use a neutral to oxidizing flame. The glass thickness also affects the final color appearance. Generally, self-striking rubies are cleaner, less bubbly, and offer a more uniform red. Overall, each type of Northstar ruby has unique characteristics, ensuring versatility in all your creations.
