The Glass Alchemy Cobalt-1 rod is a vibrant blue, ideal for small sculptures, hobnails, and beads. It is the second lightest of the Glass Alchemy cobalt colors, offering a perfect balance of brightness and vibrancy. This glass lets light pass through while maintaining an intense, brilliant color. It melts easily and works smoothly, similar to clear glass. Its ability to retain and absorb heat makes it versatile, suitable for both small pieces and fine details.

Mike Shelbo describes it as “almost a transparent water blue. It’s light enough to let some light through but vibrant enough to stand out.” He adds, “Cobalt-1 melts easily and behaves like clear glass. Perfect for precise sculptures and beads, retaining heat throughout the process.”

It is recommended to work with a neutral flame to avoid gray streaks from reduction, preserving the vibrant color.

There is also Cobalt Lite, the lightest of the cobalt range. This glass is designed for creating large sculptures while maintaining a subtle blue tint. It works similarly to Cobalt-1 but with a more pronounced transparency. When blown thin, the blue tint becomes less visible, offering a lighter, airier effect. Cobalt Lite helps observe how heat penetrates different layers of glass.
